CHANDIGARH: After the Punjab police have given up on UK teenager Hanna Foster''s alleged killer Maninderpal Singh Kohli, uncertainity hovers, as of now, on the future course of investigations against him as the CBI is still not in a position to take over his extradition case.
The uncertainty persists as the CBI, which is an Interpol agency in the country, has not yet received the extradition request from the UK police after more than a fortnight of Kohli''s arrest.
Consequently, the special court for Kohli''s trial has not been constituted as yet.
Police sources say this has left Kohli in the mid-air. The Kharar court''s decision to send him to judicial custody has come as an easy way out in a situation when the Punjab police do not need him any more for their investigation and the CBI is not adequately equipped to take up the case.
Kohli has since been remanded to judicial custody till August 14.
The Punjab police have, meanwhile, informed the CBI about it and suggested it to initiate extradition proceedings against Kohli.
Will Kohli go scot free if the CBI fails to receive the extradition request during the period Kohli remains in the judicial custody?
Senior police officers, who see it as a remote possibility, say in the event of this happening, Kohli would be free to walk out of the custody.
Earlier, in Kalimpong, where Kohli was arrested last month, the CBI had expressed its inability to take up his case following which the Punjab police was allowed custody of Kohli in connection with a case registered against him in the Mohali police station.
